Here are five of the most interesting tidbits Josh, whose new album All That Echoes comes out February 5, shared with the magazine.
He Does Not Sing ‘Popera’
It’s hard to find a name for the music Josh makes, but whatever you do, don’t refer to it as ‘popera.’
“It irks me,” he said. “Because it trivializes something that’s actually very difficult to do. It feels dismissive. My voice is classical in nature, but I’ve always viewed my music as pop, influenced by the arrangements of yesteryear, when big, open-throated singing was the popular style.”
He Has An ‘Inner Douchebag’ Just Waiting To Be Revealed
Josh might appear to be all sugar and sweet with his operatic voice and boy next-door charm, but in his new movie, Coffee Town, where he plays a “disgruntled barista who’s in a rock band,” he taps into a very different side of himself.
“They put the douchiest tattoos on me,” he told the mag. “Like flames coming up one arm, plus a goatee, eyeliner, and a studded leather bracelet.”
Josh explains he tried to channel Creed frontman Scott Stapp for the role.
“I felt that if I could get a ‘With Arms Wide Open’ music-video vibe behind the coffee counter, that would be successful.”
He Takes Pride In Being Nerdy, But Is A Rocker At Heart
Dressed in a Mr. Rogers sweater, the singer explained he isn’t ashamed of his dorky persona, but would like people to know he listened to a lot of grunge as a kid.
“I wanted to open my mouth and sound like Eddie Vedder, I didn’t want to sound angelic,” he said.
Josh recently told Billboard that classic rock artists like Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull and Fleetwood Mac were a big influence on his latest album.
He Thinks Kanye West Might Be The Funniest Person On Twitter
“No, I don’t think he got the joke,” he said. “Kanye lives in a phenomenal world all his own. But man, those tweets! If he doesn’t know they’re comedy gold, then God help him, truly.”
Yes, He Kind Of, Almost Dated Katy Perry
The singer, who says he and Katy are “very good friends,” revealed that he and the California Gurl were sort of an item back in the day.
“We might have skated on the line of dating,” he said.
The singer goes on to say his most meaningful relationship was with Mad Men actress, January Jones.
“We dated for about two and a half years, and we were madly in love,” he explained. “It was definitely my longest relationship. I’d love to get into another serious relationship. I am a real romantic at heart.”
