(CBS Radio) — Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we had road signs on the road of life? Or a map showing us the right direction to go in?
The one thing about life that is certain, is that it is uncertain.
Human beings have free will and constantly make choices that affect their life.
Throughout the day, people are faced with daily situations that require them to make decisions.
Though not all decisions are complex, such as where to eat lunch or which store to shop at, some decisions require a lot of consideration — especially life-changing decisions.
Have you ever made a decision that you regret because you were fueled by emotion? If so, you’re not alone. In truth, the majority of people make decisions when they do not have a clear head and/or without weighing the pros and cons.
The good news is that people are capable of making better decisions. The first step is to separate yourself from the situation and the emotion you feel regarding the situation. Separating yourself from how you feel or what is going on may seem impossible, but it’s actually quite simple.
Distracting yourself during times when difficult decisions are necessary, is a great way to make better choices. It’s a lot easier to come up with the right solution once you are looking from the outside in, rather than from the inside out. Even if a person only distracts themselves for a few minutes, the distraction helps them to calm down and provides them with enough clarity to make a better decision.
Here are some great ways to distract yourself before making a tough decision:
- If you’re creative, work on an artistic project
- Listen to music
- Go for a walk
- Go for a drive
- Go shopping
Once you’ve made a decision, stick with it and make the best of it. It isn’t healthy to continue to analyze your choices.
