(CBS Charlotte) — It’s October — perhaps, better known as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. By now, we are all aware of what the pink ribbon symbolizes, and various other facts about Breast Cancer — but do you know that changing your eating habits can reduce the likelihood of developing breast cancer?

While it’s true that limiting your dairy and meat intake can lower your chances of developing breast cancer, it’s important to remember that what you eat is as important as what you don’t eat.

Here are the Top 12 Foods that Reduce Your Risk Of Developing Breast Cancer:

12 and 11. Fish, Nuts — According to the British Medical Journal, eating fish can reduce your risk of developing breast cancer by 14 percent. Fish and nuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acids which boosts your immune system and improves blood circulation.

10. Berries — Berries contain high levels of ellagic acid, which is known for reducing the likelihood of developing breast cancer, along with skin, bladder, lung, and esophagus cancers. For best results, eat a lot of strawberries and raspberries.

9 and 8. Beans, Cereal — Foods high in fiber, such as beans and cereal lower your risk of developing breast cancer. Research shows that consuming 10 grams of fiber daily reduces your risk of breast cancer by 7 percent.

7 and 6. Tomatoes/Carrots — Tomatoes and carrots, and red and orange fruits and vegetables contain carotenoids. Eating an abundance of red and orange fruits and vegetables can reduce your breast cancer risk by 20 percent.

5 and 4. Broccoli/Kale — Dark green vegetables, such as broccoli and Kale belong to the cruciferous family. Vegetables in this family have been proven to aid in the prevention of tumor growth.

3. Pomegranates — Eating pomegranates or drinking pomegranate juice hinders the growth of estrogen based breast cancer cells.

2 and 1. Tofu, Soy/Almond Milk — Foods high in Vitamin D decrease the likelihood of developing cancer. Consuming Vitamin D and getting adequate amounts of sunlight daily, can cut your breast cancer risk in half.
