The High Cost Of Holy Matrimony
It’s that time of year. Will you be going to a wedding anytime soon? Get ready to dig way down into your pocket. And I’m not just talking about the bride, groom, and their parents. Sure, weddings are expensive if you’re the ones tying the knot but, according to a new online survey, the average cost of simply being a guest at a wedding is $572! That’s up a whopping 75% from just two years ago.
Researchers at American Express did a random sampling of adults and found that dollar amount doesn’t even include the price of the gift. Most guests said they’ll spend an average of $109 for a wedding present, so now we’re up to $681. If you have to travel out of town for the nuptials, the study shows that your total shoots up to $701, with $308 going toward transportation and accommodations and $164 for clothing and accessories. Add in the gift, and we’re looking at $810!
Of course, if you’re part of the wedding party, you’ll be spending even more on the happy occasion. American Express found that 78% of bridesmaids will buy a new dress, but only 26% said they plan on wearing it again. Half of the bridesmaids that responded to the survey said they’d give their dress to a used clothing store or to a friend after a wedding. 20% said they’d actually keep it and hang it in their closet.
I guess this is why some people choose to run off and elope in Vegas!
