Does this mean Bey's finally ready to embrace feminism?

After Beyoncé gave birth to her daughter Blue Ivy last year, something changed. Bey addressed the transformation in the March issue of Vogue, explaining that having a baby made her think differently about what it really means to be a woman.

“Right now, after giving birth, I really understand the power of my body,” she explained to the mag. “I just feel my body means something completely different. I feel a lot more confident about it. Even being heavier, thinner, whatever. I feel a lot more like a woman. More feminine, more sensual. And no shame.”

With help from a heavy tribal beat, Beyoncé’s latest song, “Grown Woman,” which leaked last night (May 20), touches on the power of femininity. Whether single, married or somewhere in between, this Timbaland-produced ladies anthem is seemingly meant to get every woman up on her feet singing, “I’m a grown woman/I can do whatever I want.” Let’s consider it the sequel to “Run The World (Girls).”

Mrs. Carter has always been a powerful figure in music, but on her latest song there is a new (and different) sense of confidence here. She starts off the track by letting people know she’s been working at this since she was a little kid and she’s no one-trick pony: “Told the world I’m gonna paint this town/ Now b****** I run this.”

On the track, a snippet of which debuted in Bey’s recent Pepsi ad, she continuously touts her power. She sings, “They love the way I walk/Cause I walk with a vengeance/And they listen to me when I talk/Cause I ain’t pretending.” She ends it all by explaining that it took some time for her to get this ego boost and she’s not giving up on it anytime soon. It’s almost as if she’s letting all the ladies know, “If I can do it, so can you.”

When she delivers lines like, “I can be bad if I want/I can say what I want/I can live fast if I want/I can go slow all night long,” it’s clear she’s not apologizing for anything anymore.

(CBS Radio) — Facebook recently announced that they had over 1 billion members, but have you ever wondered, does every Facebook account represent a human?

Currently, 40 percent of people who use the world wide web also use Facebook. According to a new study conducted by eMarketer, 10 percent of Facebook accounts do not represent a human, but rather they represent a brand, company, or pet, etc. These non-human Facebook accounts make up around 100 million of the companies “active users.”

If we take that into consideration, than the number of actual members that Facebook has dips below one billion. However, eMarketer predicts that at some point in 2013, the company will reach one billion active users — who all represent an actual person.

(CBS Radio) — There are many products available for purchase throughout grocery stores nationwide that have brand recognition. But, have you ever wondered if the person behind the brand is a real person? Or, is it a character designed by the company to boost sales and help customers relate to their product?

Betty Crocker: For decades, Betty Crocker was a household name and “her” products are still very popular today. In 1945, Crocker became the second most popular woman during that year, and received an abundance of fan mail everyday. However, Betty Crocker is not a real person, but rather her character was created in the early 1920′s by the Washburn Crosby Company (now General Mills.) When Crocker landed her “very own” nationwide radio show, the company hired several “Crocker’s” to play her role while on air — and they all read from scripts.

(Related Article: The “Life And Death” Of Betty Crocker)

Aunt Jemima: There’s just something about Aunt Jemima’s smile that warms your heart. It just “feels right” to pour “her” pancake syrup onto your pancakes or waffles. Except…you guessed it, Aunt Jemima isn’t based on a real person, but rather she is just a brand. Nancy Green, a former slave, was the first person to play the role of Aunt Jemima in 1890. Back then, the company was owned and operated by the R. T. Davis Milling Company. Today, the Aunt Jemima brand is sold under the Quaker Oats Company.

Mrs. Butterworth: Mrs. Butterworth promises that “her” syrup is the best around town! “Her” syrup is “So thick. So Rich, and still…just as sweet!” Mrs. Butterworth’s syrup bottle, which is shaped to resemble a caring woman, makes you instantly feel connected to “her” goodness and warmth. However, Mrs. Butterworth does not represent an actual person. Her brand is sold under Pinnacle Foods.

(CBS Radio) — After careful consideration, Victoria’s Secret has decided not to design bras for breast cancer survivors.

Earlier this year, Allan Maiden started a petition on change.org with the hopes of encouraging Victoria’s Secret to create a special line of bras for breast cancer survivors — so that they could feel beautiful.

Maiden’s mother is a breast cancer survivor who has struggled over the years with finding a bra that can accommodate a prosthetic breast form.

Reportedly, the largest tornado was nearly a half mile wide, and the overall storm was almost 2 miles wide total, leaving a 22-mile path of complete destruction.

Two elementary schools were destroyed completely, all while students were still inside. Briarwood Elementary, and Plaza Towers Elementary Schools. KFOR-TV is reporting about 24 children from Plaza Towers have died, some of whom drowned in the pool that the school had. One teacher has been said to have protected 6 students by laying on top of them; no word on if the teacher survived or not.

The total death toll sits at 51 people so far, with that number expected to climb.

CBS reported that all students from Briarwood Elementary have been accounted for, despite being the direct-hit school.

Measured wind speeds during the storm were from 150 and 200 mph. Hail as large as baseballs were reported from Georgia to Minnesota. The tornado was measured to be an EF-4.

Imagine a path from Uptown Charlotte to Davidson, roughly 2 miles wide, completely leveled. Total destruction.

The end of school is near meaning the long days of thinking “what can I do today to keep my kids busy” are among us. Yes there are plenty of Summer Camps you can choose from (in fact if you’re still looking for some last minute summer camp options check out this blog that Brenda wrote here) but there’s nothing better than a family Day-Cation!

Day-Cation’s are a great way to have a little break from reality while the kids are on summer break, or anytime for that matter. It’s a chance for parents to take off of work on a random Monday to take the family to the zoo or what have you. Even if it’s on a Saturday or Sunday there’s something incredibly special about getting in the car and driving up to Blowing Rock for the day to shop and spend the day site seeing.

Here are, in my opinion, the Top 5 Day-Cation’s for Charlottean’s this Summer!

5: Carowinds – The Thrill Capital of the Southeast .

Growing up here in Charlotte has given me some incredible memories at Carowinds from youth outings with my Church to spending the entire day attempting to ride every single ride there with my family. Now that I have a baby girl on the way it excites me to think about the Day-Cations we’ll have at Carowinds in the years to come. I actually experienced my first concert ever at Carowinds…. Boys 2 Men… that’s right and it was awesome!

From live entertainment to some of the best roller coasters around, Carowinds has it all to make sure you and your family have a great Day-Cation.

4. US National Whitewater Center

The US National Whitewater Center my be a place for fun outdoor activities and kids must be 11 years old to go Whitewater Rafting but they have a lot more for everyone to do. In fact, try ecocaching, in which kids use GPS units pre-programmed with way-points to find “ecocaches” on the 307-acre property. Each box contains a nature lesson. Beyond that they have Festivals and celebrations going on throughout the year. To see all of their events and more what they can offer your family check out there website Here!

3. Discovery Place / Discovery Place Kids

Every year in School we would take a field trip to Discovery Place in uptown Charlotte and every year I would get more and more excited. No matter how many times you’ve been you Discover (hence the name) something new. For example, hoop playing rats…. yes that’s exactly what it is… Rats who are trained to play each other in a game of hoops. Check the schedule when you arrive— because I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t want to miss that!

And now thanks to Discovery Place Kids in Huntersville it takes the experience to a whole new level. According to DiscoveryPlaceKids.org - Discovery Place KIDS aspires to maximize the whole child by providing extraordinary and rich play experiences that value imagination, fun and learning.

2. NASCAR Hall of Fame

We as Charlottean’s have a TON to be proud of and being the Home of NASCAR are just one of many and having the NASCAR Hall of Fame in our backyard… is pretty cool. What’s awesome about the NASCAR HOF is that even if you’re not the biggest racing fan, it still has plenty for you to see and do. It’s full of interesting history and facts about not only the sport, but about our area as well, not to mention the kids will love seeing all of the Race Cars on display. Plus the games are fun for the adults (who, like me, act like kids) too! I highly suggest checking out the NASCAR Hall of Fame, I promise it wont disappoint.

The Hall will soon be opening it’s largest exhibit to date called “Lights, Camera, NASCAR” and on June 1st they are having a Premire Party and kids get in FREE! Get more details here!

Also our very own Brenda Matthews visited the exhibit last week during Media Night and was able to take a tour of “Lights, Camera, NASCAR”… Read about it and see her pictures here!

1. Grandfather Mountain/Blowing Rock /Boone – Area

I might be somewhat biased simply because my amazing wife Graduated from Appalachian State University and is currently in Grad School there as well and we lived in Blowing Rock for the first year of our Marriage. But in all honesty the Boone/Blowing Rock area is absolutely beautiful and creates the perfect atmosphere for a great Family Day-Cation.

Make the two hour scenic drive up 321 to Blowing Rock and stop for lunch at one of the many restaurants on Main Street before heading to Grandfather Mountain! Or take I-77 N to 421 N that takes you right into Downtown Boone to enjoy Lunch at one of the many restaurants there.

There are concerts in the park going on almost every weekend in Blowing Rock or Boone. There is always something to do at either one of those great towns… and they’re only a 10 minute drive from each other.

For a list of Events in Blowing Rock – Click here!

For a list of Events in Boone – Click here!

I do highly Suggest visiting Grandfather Mountain if you never have!

Summer is coming and you and your teenage kids might have differing opinions about how they’ll be spending their newly found free time. Once school ends, you’d love for kids to be productive, get out of the house, learn some life and career skills and maybe even save up a little money for that care they’ve been begging you for. Your teens, on the other hand, probably picture their summer lounging by the pool with friends, playing video games, and spending their free time begging you for that car they’re sure they’ve almost convinced you to buy them. Believe it or not, it is possible for everyone to meet in the middle on this one (just don’t expect the phrase “get a job” to be met without at least a little whining). Here are 10 part-time jobs that will satisfy their need for a little free time and fun in the sun while they garner a sense of responsibility and some extra cash.

SPEND TIME OUTSIDE:Parks and Recreation
Check with your city’s parks and recreation department.
Water & Amusement Parks
Your teens want to spend time outdoors, splashing around in the water anyway, why not suggest they make some money while there? The local water parks will be looking to fill positions for concession stand workers, ride attendants, ticket booth operators, and lifeguards. Friendly teens who enjoy a happy, family-oriented environment and waterside sunshine might enjoy spending their summer working in and around the water slides and amusement park rides.

Dog Walker/Dog Sitter
Not every hard working dog owner sends her dog to doggy daycare, but many would appreciate having someone’s help with dog walking and a little attention for their canine darlings during the day. Additionally, pet owners may need someone to care for their furry friends while they’re on vacation or away for business.

Car Dealerships
Have your teen make some inquiries with local car dealerships. Often they need young people who are willing to wash cars and run errands. Looking at beautiful cars all day may inspire them to save the money they are earning, and–big plus–the dealership may even offer a small discount for part-time employees if your teen really makes a good impression.

Bicycle Shops
If your teenage son or daughter is into mechanics or just bikes in general, a local bicycle repair/sales shop might be the perfect place to look for a job. Spending time at a bicycle shop may afford your teen skills in bicycle repair, sales, and customer service.

Camp Counselor
It also fosters creativity, as counselors have to come up with fun activities to keep the kids occupied.
